A bizarre experience

I don't think I have ever had such a strange hotel experience as that of the Hotel Delle Nazioni in Milan. I have been to Milan many times and stayed at a number of hotels in Italy over a period of many years but decided on this one this time as the price seemed good. I wish I hadn't. The good things are that it is only about eight minutes walk to the Milano Centrale railway station and is easy to find. Maybe ten minutes walk to Corso Buenos Aries and twenty to the Duomo. There are a number of bars and restaurants very close to the hotel. The reception staff are very friendly, helpful and professional. But that's where the good stuff ends. I arrived early, my fault. But even when the check-in time came round it still wasn't possible for any guests to check in as there were apparently some water/plumbing issues in the rooms. The staff did offer to store my baggage or I could sit in the lounge, but there was no offer of a complimentary coffee or anything similar despite the fact that it was their check-in issue not mine or the other guests. Keys to the rooms are big heavy, old fashioned things. Going to my room I noticed that every corner of the corridor there were air fresheners sitting on the floor! (see photo). The whole place smelled musty, so presumably the staff were well of that, thus the fresheners. As for the double room itself, it was gaudy. I was wondering if I'd just been sent back to the 1970s. Horrible lamp shades, a bright red plastic chair of a type you might normally find as part of garden furniture (see photo), a desk which appeared to just be some pieces of plain wood put together and painted. The room had an air-conditioner but it was situated between the window and the curtain......so if you used it, the cold air would get trapped between the two rather circulating freely around the room. And as for the curtain, about 70% of the window was covered in a light, cream coloured curtain and only 30% with coloured curtain. Maybe some outsiders could see inside when the light was on...who knows. There was a safe in the room and there was also a kettle to boil water and a coffee machine which takes pods. Only trouble is.....there were no pods, no instant coffee, no tea nor even a mug/cup to drink from! I really don't know what they're there for as the staff member told me that they don't have any coffee/tea for the guest rooms! Again, I have attached a photo. There is also an empty fridge in the room. I opened the window at night for some fresh air and woke up at 0200 to 0300 each morning covered in mosquito bites. I have stayed at four other hotels in the vicinity of Milano Centrale and never ever got bitten by mosquitos. Quite strange. The hotel has a small bar area but nobody serving at the bar. Instead you have to go to reception and ask one of the staff there to come to the bar to serve. No problem with that however as they did so with a happy face. There is an outdoor 'garden area' with seats, tables and ash trays but as the area is surrounded by high buildings, I doubt it gets any sun. In fact, the 'fauna/plants' there are all of the faux, plastic variety so that tends to confirm it. And then.....the breakfast......if it could even remotely be referred to as a breakfast! Never anywhere in the world, in any hotel have I experienced such a shockingly bad effort for breakfast. It's difficult to describe in words just how poor it is. Next to nothing. My second day there I noted a dark piece of paper on a counter with dark writing on it, which could hardly be read and it actually provided a (very scant) menu. Wasn't much on it and nothing that would entice the taste buds! You would have to see the breakfast area to believe it.....but I wouldn't wish that on anyone. The amusing thing in the breakfast area is a sign on the wall saying that you couldn't take the plates etc to your room! So despite the room not having a mug or cup....you're also not allowed to take them from the 'breakfast' room! I have attached a photo of the sign. I would like to have given this hotel just one star, but I feel sorry for the staff who were very helpful and as professional as they could be, thus the two stars. But would I stay again or recommend the hotel to anyone? That's a very definite.....no!

Central Hotel in the station area , small rooms clean hotel NO BREAKFAST EVEN IF YOU PAY ....very annoying to have a coffe machine in the room and no one in the hotel sells capsules no instant coffee and no breakfast i discovered only last day that there is an a sort of breakfast very very poor served in a room while reception told me no breakgast at all..

The hotel is convenient for Milano Centrale station being about 10 minutes walk and also close by are metro and trams so it is certainly well connected and there are also a few eating and drinking places within 5-10 minutes walk so that is well taken care of. I paid for an ‘executive room’ which was ok to start with but it had a minibar which was empty (!) and also there was a kettle in the room but no tea or coffee at all. When I asked for something at reception, they said they only had coffee capsules but I said I had no coffee machine to use them in my room. They just smiled but never actually did anything about it but I had not paid for a basic room but something better. The hotel for me fell short of expectations and there didn’t seem to be much desire to correct things. Not impressed and would probably give the place a miss in future and stay somewhere else.

The rooms are clean, spacious and air conditioned. Great breakfast spread. Great location. Walking distance to the train station and the main piazza. The staff are courteous and friendly. Kevin at reception was very very helpful; nothing was too much trouble for him.

Decent hotel, not too far from the main central station. Reception was always welcoming and helpful. The room was clean and comfortable so had no issues. The lift is a little small so had to wait once or twice, but worth the money
